Avian Disease

There. are hundreds of diseases that can affect birds. The fact sheets provided on this website include a few selected diseases that are either commonly found in Ontario or are of importance because they have international significance and are listed as federally reportable diseases.

Some of the diseases described affect specific species of birds. For example fading ostrich syndrome is a condition of ostriches and pigeon herpesvirus or pigeon circovirus affect only pigeons. If you are interested in diseases that are of importance to a particular class or group of birds then go to the Home Page and click on that particular bird group listed on the left hand side of the website. The diseases of importance for that group or type of bird will appear on the right hand bar.

The fact sheets are intended to provide a summary of the disease, its significance, the clinical presentation and the lesions typically found at post mortem. Treatment options or specific antibiotic recommendations are not included in detail because it is important that you discuss treatment and control options with your veterinarian. This site will be dynamic and disease fact sheets will be updated and new ones added.
