Low cost Biosecurity Ideas
Biosecurity - what is it?
-
Preventing disease in animals prevents animal suffering, economic losses and
the spread of zoonotic disease to humans
-
Programs need to be sensible and simple so that they will be followed - They
also need to be suited to the set-up of the farm, existing problems and the
management style
-
The most likely way disease will be spread is from like animal to like animal
(ie. cow to cow, pig to pig)
-
Therefore, to prevent disease transmission, ensure each animal is raised in a
clean, well-bedded, well-ventilated environment with easy access to good feed
and clean water. This will increase their resistance to disease, And;
-
Limit animal and vector movement from barn to barn, or farm to farm
-
Biosecurity measures rely a great deal on common sense and practising them
every day until they are accepted as part of the daily routine
-
The measures shown below are easy to implement and effective at increasing
biosecurity. These measures are low cost, or no cost
